For our first game since Dec 7th on a windy day and a not surprisingly heavy pitch we had a day when the result was far far better than the performance.
This Trophy is a reward for the previous seasons excellence and during the whole game we looked rusty and playing downhill with the wind behind didnt help. Westfield held there own for 20 mins and had a couple of forays into the edge of our area without too much threat.
On 20 mins a Will Foley free kick went through the wall and seemed to take a bobble to deceive the keeper (give Darrell as assist). Within 5 mins we scored a good second goal when Will Mullarkey released Clem Asante down the right and his excellent cross was converted on the far post by Alex Holmes.
For the rest of the half we huffed and puffed and as a spectacle it was poor.
At half time we were faced with an uphill battle both literally and metaphorically and we an early goal might well have changed the game.
That is indeed what happened but unfortunately for Westfield they conceded an own goal from a well delivered Will Mullarkey free kick within 2 mins. This was followed within another 2 mins the first of a 20 min hatrick by Clem Asante who ran onto a Les Barkers-Obua LEFT FOOTED cross, followed by an early strike after a good through ball and then touching a Joe Chott shot over the line.
All 5 subs were used and showed the strength and competition for places and Ross Hazel, made a comeback from a long term injury, and we scored a 7th when Joe Naylor converted a penalty after Les Barkers-Obua was apparently felled in the area.
Next week we face a vital game at League leaders, Maidstone Utd.
