FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Burnham 2-1 TAFC First team

TAFC goals: Matthew Mitchell
The Emirates FA Cup-Extra preliminary round.
Tuesday 13th August 2019
Burnham 2-1 Tring Athletic.

Athletic travelled to Burnham on Tuesday for this re-arranged tie. The original game being postponed following the tragic death of a Burnham player and son of their Chairman.

This was obviously going to be a difficult occasion for both sides.

The game was preceded with a minutes silence and the laying of flowers from both sides in the centre circle.

From the off it was apparent that the home side wanted this for their lost player. Any fifty fifty balls being won by them.
However Tring had two good chances to score inside the first ten minutes one particular effort bringing a good save from home keeper.

Burnham started to get on top and midway through the half a deflected shot beat Charlie Mann in our goal to give Burnham the lead. They scented victory from this point and but for a good save from Mann, a last ditch challenge in our box and a bad miss with the goal begging, Tring could have found themselves further behind. Tring picked up three booking during this period which would prove to be costly later in the game.

However the Tring side settled down and started to get back into the game, playing long periods in the home sides half. A great through ball was latched onto by Matthew Mitchell who beat the offside attempt and finished superbly to bring the sides level. This is how it stayed at half-time.

The second half saw Dash Charncey replacing Joe Naylor up front and although not 100% fit, Dash started to cause problems for the home defence. Several chances were created but the final ball was just lacking or just off target.

We then pushed the self destruct button when Daniel Ferrigno received a second yellow which reduced us to 10 men. Still we created chances but we were leaving ourselves short at the back and Burnham broke away to score and put themselves in front.

More pressure from Tring had the home side defending in numbers . Then Our task was made even more difficult when Brett O'Connor received a second yellow for descent which put us down to 9 men.
Burnham were opening us up at the back with their superior numbers and won a penalty. Charlie Mann saved this to give us a bit of hope but an injury to Oran Swales after all our subs had been used left us with 8 men and although we pressed to the end, there was to be no way through the superior numbers of the opposition and we exited in the first round once again.

We wish Burnham all the best in the next round.
