Dominant performance and well deserved win.
It was the first round of the League Cup today, I wasn't quite sure of the level of the opposition or how we would respond to the disappointing performance last week. As it turned out, Chinnor Youth weren't too strong and the boys confidently put last week behind them and delivered a dominant performance.
We setup with an attacking formation, looking to threaten Chinnor from our wide positions and well as through the middle. From the start we had them under constant pressure, with the ball rarely making it into our half. Despite this domination, we didnt make too many chances and the Chinnor keeper made 3 great saves, one a ridiculous reaction save from a great shot from Tom - it felt like one of those days to grind out a result. We made a couple of changes on 25 minutes and on 33 minutes we were finally rewarded when Finn clipped a ball from the edge of the area into the top corner. We were not flattered by a 1-0 lead at half-time.
Half Time Chinnor 0 - Tring 1
At half-time I asked the boys to be more courageous, move the ball faster and not wait for the game to come to them.
They followed this guidance to the letter and were even more dominant, moving the ball from left to right with lots of short sharp passing moves. On 51 minutes, a neat pass into the area from Cornick was met by Alex to poke the ball past their advancing keeper. Yet more pressure resulted in a corner on 53 minutes and Cornick headed in on the front post.
At 3 - 0, it was time to ensure everyone played as much football as possible, so we started making changes. This had the inevitable result of disrupting our continuity and we lost a little shape and a little momentum in the final 15 minutes. On 91 minutes Chinnor nipped in and scored a consolation goal - annoying but unimportant.
Final Score Chinnor 1 - Ting 3
Without getting too carried away (Chinnor were really not very strong), we're extremely pleased with today's result. Lots of reasons for this; the boys could have lost confidence after the result last week - they didn't, we could have got frustrated by the lack of early goals today - we didn't - we worked it out and we should be looking back on 5 straight wins (last week was winnable, as was the Widmer game). These are all positives as we prepare to take on Berko away next Sunday.
