Suburban League Cup
TAFC Reserve team 3-1 Royston FC
TAFC goals: Jack Read (2), Joe Smith
Tring Athletic Reserves (1)3 Royston Town Res (1)1
The Ressies progressed through to the last 8 of the Lea.Cup by taking their second Premier Division scalp in consecutive rounds. We will play the winners of Ascot Utd/Corinthian Casuals away from home date tbc.
Playing up the slope and into a breeze we started reasonably well movingly the ball out wide at every opportunity and a couple of crosses could well have led to promising situations. Royston Town played a longer game into their forward who did well to either hold the ball up or play into dangerous areas for their midfield to join in and spray the ball about.
After some excellent play down our right and a cross from Will Salmon resulted in a Jack Read finish.
Royston Town came back into it by playing cross field passes and began to pepper us with a number of crosses and corners and from one of the them a disappointingly free header on the far post to equalise within 10 mins.
Our opponents continued to dominate and although they failed to create much we struggled to get a grip on proceedings.
A change of shape at half time and the fact we were playing downhill meant we got back in the game. We matched them up in midfield and when we had the ball we played it out wide and created some decent chances. Just as it looked as if we were going to fail to take advantage a great run by Scott Henderson and a pulled back cross resulted in a tidy Joe Smith, who had a much improved game , finish to restore the lead.
Royston Town began to run out of energy and within 8 mins a long pass from Luke Priestley found Joe Naylor who from wide on the left cut in and hit a pacy cross for Jack Read to finish on the near post.
We then changed to a 4-5-1 to see out the game.
