Leighton Town 2-3 TAFC First team

TAFC goals: Ashton Campbell (2), George Ironton
IMPORTANT DERBY WIN

Athletic continue their winning ways against an in form Leighton side who have only lost one of their last ten games. Impressive finishing from Ashton Campbell with 2 goals and George Ironton early in the second half saw Athletic deservedly take the three points.

With a strong swirling wind and bumpy pitch conditions were going to be difficult for both sides.

Although Town had the better of the first few minutes it was Athletic who created the first chance when Ashton Campbell was played through, but from an angle the home keeper easily saved. Athletic then took the lead after 10 minutes. A through ball from George Ironton found Ashton Campbell who rounded the keeper before firing into the far corner. Score 0-1.

A further similar chance just 6 minutes later saw Ashtons shot deflected for an obvious corner but a goal kick was given. Town had created little until the 28th minute when a shot, under pressure, by Tom Salford was easily saved by Patrick Sinfield. Athletic nearly added to their score in the 32nd minute when a shot was only parried out by the keeper to Lee Stobbs who then blasted just wide.

Against the run of play Town then equalised after 36 minutes. A long throw came in and the ball was flicked on at the near post across goal by a Town player before finding Ross Adams who finished clinically. Score 1-1.

Athletic probably felt disappointed having created a number of chances and in stoppage time of the first half fought back to re-take the lead. Following a free kick which home keeper Charlie Jones could only fist clear to George Ironton. The ball was re-cycled by him finding Mark Riddick who headed across goal to Ashton Campbell who volleyed home. HT Score 1-2.

Athletic started the second half on the front foot. In the first minute Lee Stobbs had room on the right and found himself running towards goal but the keeper managed to block his shot and was then fortunate to gather the loose ball. Just 4 minutes later Athletic scored their third goal. Roy Byron patiently held the ball up just outside of Towns area before laying the ball back to George Ironton to unleash a shot which flew into the far corner of the goal. Score 1-3.

Town were finding it difficult to break down Athletics solid defence. Athletic had a couple of half chances, firstly Jon Clements firing over the bar and then Lee Stobbs having his shot blocked. Athletic appeared to be containing the home side fairly comfortably until given a life line in the 68th minute. A long ball was played towards Athletics goal, striker Ross Adams and defender Joe Fitzgerald both ran for the ball which looked to be going wide of the goal, however a tackle came in from the defender which was adjudged to be a penalty. Towns Jordan Fredericks took the spot kick which keeper Patrick Sinfield made a great attempt to save. Score 2-3.

Town sensed that they may get something from the game after scoring and Athletic had to be disciplined and to continue to work hard. From a direct free kick just outside of Towns area Kieran Turner just shot over the bar in the 83rd minute. Athletic kept their composure and although Town were seeing a lot of the ball they did not create any clear chances. FT Score 2-3.

A terrific result for Athletic who restricted Town to very few shots/chances throughout the game but continually created chances themselves .An impressive and disciplined all round display by the players.
