Oxhey Jets 0-2 TAFC First team
TAFC goals: Kieran Turner, Christopher Vardy
WIN AT JETS
This match was never going to live up to last weeks excellent game, but Athletic managed to come away with all three points thanks to goals by Kieran Turner and Chris Vardy. Oxhey Jets always give a good account of themselves and this was no exception.
The home side started on the front foot but it was Athletic who opened the scoring in the 7th minute. A ball was played to striker Chris Vardy who then flicked the ball through to Kieran Turner who beat home keeper Matt Evans to the ball before rounding him to slot into an empty goal. Score 0-1.
Within a couple of minutes Jets nearly equalised when Ryan O,Sullivan, who looked in an offside position, lobbed over the bar. Athletic began to sit deep allowing the home side to push forward well into Athletics half, but then broke away and had a great chance to increase their lead. Young Billie Busari put Chris Vardy through but keeper Matt Evans just managed to get his hand to the ball as Chris tried to go around him.
With half time approaching there was little to choose between the two sides. HT Score 0-1.
Within 2 minutes of the re-start Jets Ryan OSullivan shot from just outside of the penalty area but the ball flew high and wide. Just 2 minutes later Athletic were awarded an obvious penalty when Chris Vardy was clearly pushed over. Kieran Turner stepped up after scoring Athletics last spot kick but unfortunately his shot was well saved by Matt Evans diving low to his left. This was Athletics third penalty miss this season.
From a Jets corner in the 54th minute there was a mad melee in the penalty area, the home side felt that the ball had clearly gone into the goal but neither the referee nor his assistant controversially agreed. Jets continued to press forward but Athletic were defending well and were dangerous when breaking forward.
Both sides introduced substitutes and with the game entering the last ten minutes Athletic then scored again. Kieran Turner collected the ball down the left then cut inside and unleashed a powerful shot which Matt Evans finger tipped onto the bar, the ball however dropped nicely for Chris Vardy at the far post to nod into the goal. Score 0-2.
Although Jets had a lot of possession it wasnt until the 88th minute that they had a shot on target. Luke Jones hit a tremendous shot from around 35 yards which visiting keeper Connor Sansom tipped onto the bar and out for a corner. Following 4 minutes of stoppage time the referee blew for full time. FT Score 0-2.
Athletic can be pleased with the result and remain unbeaten in the league with everyone playing their part against difficult opponents. Athletic had to make four changes from last weeks game as players were either injured, working or unavailable.
