TAFC First team 1-1 Sun Sports

TAFC goals: Tommy Twelves
After two narrow defeats Athletic were looking to return to winning ways against Sun Sports, who last season won both league games. Our visitors again fielded two former Athletic players, goalkeeper Matt Evans and midfielder Ryan McMahon.

After just 4 minutes Sun lost defender Gary Wallace who had dislocated his finger, Joe Horwood coming on to replace him. Sun were the first to create a chance with a header going just past the post. Athletic then produced some neat football which resulted in Chris Blunden firing over the bar from just inside of the area. In the 25th minute Sun opened the scoring. Athletic lost possession on the edge of Sun's area, a long ball was played to Luke Wells out on the left, who was in acres of space, unmarked and well inside Athletics half. When challenged he stepped inside and rifled a shot into the top far corner of the goal. It was a well taken goal.

Athletic started to show signs of frustration resulting in yellow cards for Luke Dunstan and Chris Vardy.

Athletic began the second half on the ascendancy with Luke Dunstan having his shot saved by keeper Matt Evans. After this brief period Sun then had two very good chances to increase their lead. First Elliott Goward shot just wide then a few minutes later Ceyran Karagozlu had a one on one with keeper Jack Hopwood, who fortunately won that contest. Athletic then had a tremendous chance to equalise. Ryan Sturges was played in following some neat football, but with only the keeper to beat he agonisingly rolled the ball the wrong side of the post. A further chance then fell to Tommy Twelves but his shot flew high and wide.

In the 72nd minute Sun's Ceyran Karagozlu again threatened but Jack Hopwood came to Athletics rescue saving with his legs. Just 3 minutes later Athletic finally found an equaliser. Chris Vardy charged down a clearance, then ran with the ball to the byline before crossing and finding Tommy Twelves to calmly fire home from close range. Athletic tried desperatley to score again by pushing forward at every opportunity, they did have the ball in the net in stoppage time but this was rightly ruled out for offside.

A draw was probably a fair result as neither side managed to dominate possession for any period of time.
