First match in three weeks and everyone was excited to be playing again after the run of bad weather. The day was sunny yet cold, perfect weather conditions for the third round for Tring in the league cup against third place Tooting and Mitcham (T&M).
T&M won the toss and played into the sun. The first ten minutes of the match both teams tried to settle. This made for a scrappy start with the ball being bounced back and forth between the teams. Soon Tring took the game by the scuff of the neck and started to dominate possession early in the game. Tring put together some good plays both down the left wing with Davey and Evans down the right, using the different styles of play working well to complement the front runners. Sa. Green and Coggins both having breaks and opportunities on goal. However, Athletic were dealt a blow against the run of play. T&M’s were fortunate to score from a Tring deflection. Athletic heads did not drop and they went back at T&M and soon got there just rewards.
Tring’s first goal came from Davey who after doing a great run down the left seemed to scoop the ball dipping perfectly to bring the ladies even. T&M were not going to be easily beaten and after that started to play their own game, pulling balls through the middle, turning and releasing the front runners. A few times they managed to get on goal but Witney was available to clear up any that came through. The defence worked really hard, cutting out most of the balls coming through and keeping pace with the T&M strikers. The game was back on level pegging and was turning out to be a real nail biting match. Just before half time Tring started to push back and Sa. Green going on her mazy runs got one on one with the keeper and slotted in the ball expertly to the keeper’s right.
After the half time break Tring kept the team as it was and knew they had to keep their heads for another 45 minutes. T&M came out hungry for a win and pushed hard in the middle of the pitch were Hurry and Darlington did a fantastic job, closing them down, making crucial challenges and spreading the ball to go forward. Despite T&M pushing forward Tring had some good chances themselves and Sa. Green managed to capitalise on one soon after the start. Now Tring had a two goal cushion but had to stay focussed and keep the ball. T&M kept pushing and had several chances, pushing through but shooting wide or Trips was there again to save it. Maj came on for Coggins, and tireless closed down making a nuisance of herself. Putman and Allen had great games keeping pace with the strikers and clearing the ball when it most needed it. This was helped by the dominate voice of the back four, So. Green who along with Witney, kept control. A few times Tring were saved by the last tackle but for the most part were coping with the strong T&M side who were pushing for a goal. T&M second goal came from a header from a cross which Witney managed to get fingertips too but the ball still got over the line. With fifteen minutes still to play Tring had to hold out and hopefully not have to play into extra time as the comfortable lead had slipped. Tring kept possession well and T&M did not have too many more chances on goal. in the last minute of the game T&M got a free kick a yard outside the penalty box. This was a nerve racking time for all. T&M took the direct free kick, which thankfully to Tring and all the supporters sailed over the bar. Finally the whistle blew and Tring not only had their first win this year but also were in the quarter finals of the league cup against East Barnet.
A great game by all. A special mention to Tam Dunn who lead the side on her 100th appearance, joining Sally Green (102) and Sophie Green (111) in passing that milestone for the club. Also to Sally Green also netted her 100th and 101st goal for Tring. A round of applause is also due to Trip Witney who not only played for Tring today but also ran the MK half marathon before the game!
