Our title hopes were deal a blow when two goals within 5 minutes late in the first half was enough to clinch a valuable win for Aylesbury and take them to the top of the table. We had our moments and created some chances but we lacked the cutting edge on the night to pierce the home defence. Aylesbury now have a one point lead and two games in hand over us and will therefore assume the mantle of favourites to win the Premier Division but there are still lots of games to be played so the race is far from over.
We made one change from Saturday’s line up with impressive new signing Simon Ellis dropping out through injury and being replaced by Chris Salmon who finished a one match ban. We took the game to Aylesbury winning a free kick in a dangerous area and then 2 corners within the space of the first two minutes. Then four minutes later Vinnie Iannone robbed a defender and smacked a shot against Aylesbury keeper Steve Smith with the rebound falling just too quickly to Mark Burfoot who was unable to keep his shot down. In the eighth minute Graham Hall released Ashley Addison down the right and his cross was destined to find the head of Mark Burfoot until there was a timely interception.
Craig Henney showed his speed to latch onto a loose ball and whip a cross to the far post where Gareth Price would have probably scored but for a terrific block by Rob Duncan. During these early stages we looked the more threatening side and twice Tony Fields caused problems down the left, firstly hitting a shot straight at the Steve Smith then sending in a cross which the keeper cleared with difficulty for a corner whilst under pressure from Vinnie Iannone.
But after our good start Aylesbury started to get back into the game and we started to drop deep. The former Wealdstone player Ross Lafeyette turned nicely and from distance struck a shot which was easily saved by Mike Underwood. We did manage to break out in the 37th minute when Graham Hall’s pass found Vinnie Iannone who did well to work himself some space but his shot flew straight at the keeper. But it was no surprise when Aylesbury opened the scoring a minute later when Ross Lafeyette headed in a well worked short corner.
We suffered a big blow five minutes later when Aylesbury doubled the lead with a fortuitous goal. We lost the ball in midfield and Kieron Schmidt tried to play a one two with Ross Lafeyette, the ball bounced and bobbled around and kindly fell into the young wingers path and he took full advantage to coolly slot the ball into the net to make the score 2-0 to Aylesbury.
It was disappointing to concede a second goal just before the break but we had a great chance to pull a goal back in added time when a free kick was headed back across goal and somehow the ball was kept out and cleared. After a good start and some scoring opportunities we went into the break with a disappointing 2 goal deficit and a mountain to climb.
HT: A 2 TA 0
At the break Danny Gray replaced the injured Ashley Addison and again we started the stronger forcing three corners within the first few minutes. One of the corners led to the ball bouncing around the Aylesbury penalty area but again the home defenders managed to clear the danger. Aylesbury looked content to protect their lead and hit us on the break with their quick forwards. An early free kick for the home side was well struck but Mike Underwood’s handling was assured.
We pushed forward looking for a break through to get our title ambitions back on tract. Our fourth corner of the second half in the 55th minute was dropped by the keeper and when Tony Fields was unable to force the ball home he laid it back to Chris Salmon whose shot was deflected over for another corner. Later Vinnie Iannone won the ball in the area and played it to Mark Burfoot who shot at goal. Steve Smith was prostrate but he still managed to stretch up and paw the shot away. It was clearly not going to be our day.
Aylesbury broke quickly whenever they could and we had a narrow escape when Kieron Schmidt got away down the left and crossed to Craig Henney at the far post, but he couldn’t direct his header properly and Mike Underwood was able to save. With just over 20 minutes to go we brought on Darren Franklin for Rob Duncan and went to a more attacking 3-4-3 formation but by then we had run out of ideas and Aylesbury ran out comfortable 2-0 winners.
FT: A 2 TA 0
A disappointing result but the players worked hard and they created some scoring opportunities but they didn’t get the breaks whilst Aylesbury showed how clinical they are by putting their chances away. The Bucks side are now in the driving seat but there are still a lot of points to play for and we will hope to keep the pressure on them by returning to winning ways, hopefully starting at home to Leverstock Green on Saturday.
