St Marys Cup Quarter Final
Sponsored by Bob Winter
TAFC First team 1-2 Berkhamsted FC

TAFC goals: Jack Thomson
Another very late goal killed off Athletic's hopes of retaining the St Marys Cup this season as local rivals Berkhamsted scored in the last minute of normal time with a screamer of a goal from James Armstrong to win this tie by 2-1. Athletic began the game kicking up hill and struggled against the wind and rain. They won a corner in the 10th minute but this was cleared easily. Then in the 12 minute Berkhamsted’s Burnett picked up the ball ran between two defenders who failed to get in a challenge, his shot then went in off the post to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Tring tried to respond and some tough tackling from the visitors gave them some attempts on goal. Dave Whicker shot just wide and then from another free kick the ball was headed just wide. After 28 minutes Brett Court’s great through ball found Ashley Addison but he shot wide.Chris Salmon picked up a yellow for a late challenge which was quickly followed by a caution to Berkhamsted’s Armstrong and Boad also for late challenges. Athletic defenders then allowed the number James Armstrong room to shoot but his effort went well over the bar. Whicker then entered the book for a bad challenge which resulted in some heated exchanges which could have resulted in Anthony Beamish getting booked but he went unpunished. Athletic won several corners but were unable to create any scoring opportunities and the half finished 0-1 to Berkhamsted.

The second half began with Athletic playing with a bit more urgency and Addison hit the bar from 30 yards out. Several long throws from Whicker into the box created some half chances which were scrambled away. The visitors made two changes before Tring Brought on Matt Myatt for Robbie Duncan. A free kick from the right came to nothing before Darren Franklin went on a good run which finished with a fierce shot which the keeper did well to put out for a corner. Matt Myatt was yellow carded for descent then Brett Court was replaced by Jack Thomson. In 68th Minute Franklin went just wide from 18 yards out and George House then replaced Tony Fields. In 82nd minute a scramble in the Berkhamsted goal mouth ended with Jack Thomson scoring on his debut for the first team to level the score. Both sides then pushed for the winner which came to the visitors in the 89th minute, when Armstrong out on the right, checked inside and fired a great goal into the net.

Report Taken from Hemel-on-line Published Date: 25 November 2009
Former stars of Berkhamsted Town FC were part of the side that crashed out of the St Mary's Cup to Berkhamsted FC, the team that stepped in to replace the now bankrupt club. Ex Town players lined up to face Berkhamsted FC on Tuesday night, and were left ruing a late winner from the Comrades' goal machine James Armstrong. Holders Tring, playing two divisions above the visitors to Cow Lane, were outplayed in the first half and went behind just 12 minutes in when Tony Burnett showed his pace and fired low under Mike Underwood. The former Chesham keeper had to be alert to an effort from Steve Flain, but was at fault when robbed by Armstrong, who fortunately for the home side was denied by.a last ditch Tring tackle. At the other end Ashley Addison hit the side netting for Athletic. The referee began putting names in the book as the derby threatened to boil over, and it was not until just before the break that visiting stopper Graeme Milner tipped away a corner to mark his first save of the day. With the advantage of the slope and wind in the second half Tring got more into the match. Addison struck the woodwork from distance while Chris Salmon cleared the bar with his effort. Both sides reshuffled as Berko looked to keep it tight at the back and Athletic went in search of an equaliser. And it duly came when sub Jack Thomson scrambled the ball home with five minutes to go. But Berko despair turned to delight when Armstrong, not to be outdone by fellow front man Burnett, blasted home his 22nd of the season having cut in from the right. The goal sealed a spot in the semi final and a tie with Oxhey Jets, another Premier Division side. For Tring it means they no longer have any cup hopes, following on from last season's unprecedented cup win.

Keeper entirely confident that this will...

...hit the bar!

Jack Thomson's debut goal makes it 1-1
