League
Broxbourne Borough 0-1 TAFC First team
TAFC goals: Graham Hall |
 |
Skipper Graham Hall led by example after his superb goal at the start of the second half proved to be the difference between the two sides. The victory was far from easy and we had to thank our young keeper Mike Underwood for some great saves as Boro mounted some determined late rallies.
It was pleasing get back on the winning trail after suffering a disappointing defeat to local rivals Aylesbury in midweek. With all the teams above us bar Royston Town dropping points we moved up one place to 4th in the table as a result of this win. Manager Phil Casserley made two changes to the midweek line up, with Dave Whicker and Tony Fields starting in place of Matt Myatt and Danny Gray.
Our early play was as bright as the weather and on one of the best playing surfaces in the league we were able to produce some flowing football, but no goals. But it didn’t last and Boro began to work their way into the game. The home sides leading scorer Ryan Wade has been a thorn in our side in past seasons and in this same fixture last year he scored a late winning goal. In the 13th minute he found himself in plenty of space but shot tamely at Mike Underwood. Boro’s right winger Bradley Drisdale used his consider speed to get away down the right on a couple of occasions but his crosses were easily cut out.
The game was more even now and midway through the half David Whicker hit a rasping shot, after a free kick had been touched to him, from about 30 yards forcing the home keeper Obey Murefu to get down quickly to push the ball round the post. Boro hit back with Rob Tungatt finding Ryan Wade with a cross but the header went wide. Boro’s big centre back Matt Watts had a shot cleared following a corner and when we won a corner we wasted it and allowed the home side to break quickly, with Rob Tungatt heading Ryan Wade’s cross wide.
As the half came to a close Mark Burfoot shot powerfully over after David Whicker had won the ball. The home keeper Obey Murefu led a bit of a charmed life after dropping two corners and some crosses and was fortunate we were not alert to the opportunity. After a good start by us we allowed Boro back in the game and the half ended all square at 0-0.

It didn’t take us long to break the ice, scoring just two minutes after the restart with a cracking goal. Andy Mullins worked his way down the right and pulled the ball back towards the edge of the area where Graham Hall struck the ball on the run and hit a shot that whistled past the keeper to make the score 1-0. Perked up by the goal we played some attractive football and created some half chances. However, we started to put pressure on ourselves by giving away silly free kicks and from one such kick Boro’s right back Danny Swift would have scored with a header but for a magnificent one handed save by Mike Underwood.
After that let off we had two great chances to put some distance between us and our hosts. In the 71st minute we broke quickly and Andy Mullins found David Whicker charging down the middle but his shot was saved by Obey Murefu. Two minutes later we broke away again this time through centre half Henry Thomas who slipped a nice pass to Andy Mullins. Mulls cut inside the defender to give himself a sight of goal but again the Boro keeper was equal to the task and his save kept his team in the game.
With just a one goal lead we were far from home and dry and as the clock ticked down Boro pushed forward looking for an equaliser. Mike Underwood made great saves from Wade and Drisdale as Boro built up a head of steam. Boro’s Danny Swift was fortunate to only get a yellow card after his trip on Vinnie Iannone from behind prevented a real scoring opportunity as Vinnie was about to seize on a pass from Andy Mullins following another quick break.
Both sides made substitutions and as the game went into added time Ryan Wade nearly had an opportunity from a corner but his shot was deflected wide. Last word went to Pani Panayiotou whose effort from close range was put over by Mike Underwood. Thus despite Boro’s late pressure we held on to claim only our second win from our last 6 visits to Goff’s Lane and put a bit of daylight between us and our hosts who were just 1 point behind in the table at the start of the game.

A good solid performance from the team and Phil Casserley will be pleased at collecting all three points from a difficult away trip. It was also our fifth clean sheet from our last eight games and the players will need to keep this parsimonious attitude going if they want to close the gap on the 3 teams above. All in all it was a good day for us.
