Molten Spartan South Midland Premier Division.
Saturday 26th September
Tring Athletic 5-0 Hillingdon Borough.
Burfoot-3, Gray, Mullins
Tring came into this game looking to follow on from their fine 4-1 win over Brimsdown Rovers in mid-week. They started the better winning a corner and a free kick in the first 2 minutes. The game settled down and became quite even with both sides winning corners, which came to nothing. In the 14th minute Tring had a good chance following another corner kick but they were unable to get a touch on the ball as it bounced around the visitors area. Then in the 16th minute a long ball out of defence was headed on by Vinnie Ionnone to Mark Burfoot, but his deft touch went just wide of the post with the keeper well beaten. Vinnie then brought the ball down well, beat two players and laid it back for Danny Gray who’s shot from 25 yards out hit the post and bounced clear. Tring won another free kick when Gray was body checked on the edge of the area. Dave Whicker’s resulting free kick went straight to the keeper. Burfoot had another half chance when picked out by Whicker, he checked his run to line up a shot, which allowed the defender the chance to recover the situation. However in the 28th minute Athletic took the lead, Hillingdon were bemoaning what they thought was a foul not being given, Tring played the ball up to Ionnone who picked out Gray out on the far left. His superb cross was misjudged by the keeper and the ball sailed into the top corner. The visitors lost the plot for a short while, moaning about decisions until finally the officials had enough and booked the number 3 and sent their manager from the dugout.
Tring were pushing forward for a second and a good move between Ionnone and Andy Mullins saw the latter’s shot go just wide. Just before the half closed, Vinnie had another chance but his shot went high and wide.
Half Time 1-0
Straight from the kick off Tring pushed forward down the hill. Gray hooked over a cross, which Burfoot volleyed just over. A second Hillingdon player picked up a yellow card for dissent in the 48th minute.
Then 4 minutes later Tring were awarded a penalty, when Burfoot was fouled as he went to strike for goal. He took the resulting spot himself and gave the keeper no chance, giving the home side a 2-0 lead.
8 minutes later came Tring's third and best goal. Ionnone picked up the ball and held off two Hillingdon players before running diagonally across field. He checked and laid the ball back to Whicker who’s precise through ball to Burfoot was a delight. The big striker timed his run to perfection and coolly rounded the keeper before slotting the ball into the empty net.
Ionnone then collected the ball from a throw in, cut inside and unleashed a fierce shot, which the keeper pushed out superbly to safety. Danny Gray was replaced by Dave Salmon on 66 minutes and Graham Hall picked up a calf injury just 2 minutes later to be replaced by Neil Roberts. Not much more action before Ashley Addison replaced Ionnone in the 76th. Hillingdon were still trying to push forward when they had a chance and Sam Mazurek had to be alert on a couple of occasions saving with his legs both times.
In the 81st min. Ashley Addison beat the keeper to a long ball out of defence. His left foot cross found Mullins and although he looked as if he had missed his chance, he checked inside before firing in for number 4.
There was still time for Athletic to score one more and in the 86th min, a quick free kick from Roberts put Burfoot through on goal and again he showed his experience and deftly footwork to coolly slot home for his hat-trick. He nearly made it 4 a minute later but the keeper who had a quite good game, saved well
