League
Hanwell Town 0-6 TAFC First team

TAFC goals: Graham Hall (2), Danny Gray, Mark Burfoot, Ashley Addison, Anthony Fields
Our past visits to Greenford in Middlesex have proved to be mainly fruitless with just 1 draw in 2004 to show in 7 games against Hanwell Town. But on this occasion we put that right big style with this crushing victory courtesy of a devastating 2nd half performance. From the kick off we looked the better side and should have been more than 1 nil ahead at the break. But Phil Casserley told his players to be more ruthless in the 2nd half and they took his message on board by scoring 5 goals without reply. This was a stunning result against a team that is traditionally strong and everyone played their part.

Due to some aches and pains a couple of changes were made to the line up from Tuesday’s great win over Chalfont St Peter with Tony Fields and Danny Gray replacing Ashley Addison and Neil Roberts and both repaid the favour with goals. In a couple of games this season we have started slowly but not on this occasion as we looked up for it straight away. Hanwell have one of the best playing surfaces in the league and that allowed us to play some terrific football. Twice early on Mark Burfoot beat his marker down the left wing and put over decent crosses which could have yielded some reward, especially the 2nd one which just evaded Darren Franklin and Tony Fields who were unmarked at the far post.

It was by no means one way traffic with the home side looking to release the tricky and speedy duo of Blaise O’Brien and Chris Mills. Steve Smith had to be alert to clear a dangerous cross at the near post and later from a corner a Hanwell player shot wide. But it wasn’t long before the crowd were treated to a goal and it came from Danny Gray in the 11th minute. It started when Tony Fields released Dave Salmon down the right and his cross picked out Mark Burfoot who neatly side stepped a challenge but his shot was charged down. The ball fell to Danny Gray who cut inside the defender and fired a shot which the home keeper Keiran Jimmy got a hand to but couldn’t keep out. It was Danny’s first start of the season and a great way to announce his return with his opening goal of the season.

Hanwell tried to get back in the game but we had the edge and should have added to our tally before half time. Chris Mills hit a shot straight at Tom Vincent and Dave Salmon was on hand at the front post to hack away a dangerous ball aimed across our area. Darren Franklin did well to get past the defender in the area and his cross was cleared rather untidily. Later Darren was denied a run at goal in the inside right channel when Ian Jimmy handled the ball but it did not look intentional.

We were playing some lovely stuff and Danny Gray nearly picked out Mark Burfoot with a fine cross. Danny later fired just over after Tony Fields pulled the ball back to him, but really Tony could have been greedier because he had a clear shot at goal. We had to be on our toes at the back and after a fine move down our left Matt O’Brien headed the subsequent cross over. With half time looming Michael Buckley would have equalised when he just beat Tom Vincent to a through ball but for the intervention of Steve Smith who read the situation superbly to get back and clear before the Hanwell player could score.

With time up Graham Hall slide rule pass picked out an intelligent run into the area by Tony Fields and only a good save from Keiran Jimmy prevented us from doubling our lead. The last action of the half was created by Hanwell’s leading scorer last season Blaise O’Brien whose shot from an acute angle landed on the roof of the net. So a first half played in glorious sunshine ended with a slim 1-0 lead to us.

During the first 45 minutes we put on a good display but had only a 1 goal advantage to show for it. There was a danger that we had let the home side off the hook but any fears of a Hanwell come back were dispelled during a second half where we showed some clinical finishing. Soon after the restart Tony Fields had a shot deflected for a corner after a penetrative run into the penalty area by Dave Whicker and Hanwell’s key midfielder Matt O’Brien found himself in some promising space on the right but the final cross came to nothing. But a 3 goal burst in a 14 minute spell changed the game and put us firmly in control.

Our second goal came in the 54th minute when Graham Hall picked out Darren Franklin, he laid the ball back to Mark Burfoot who cracked a great shot into the roof of the net. It was just the early tonic we needed and the home management responded immediately by taking off their captain Aaron Wise and replacing him with the Speedy Tashan Bradshaw. A few minutes later Neil Roberts came on for Danny Gray, and he made an immediate impact when his near post corner in the 64th minute was headed in by Graham Hall to make the score 3-0. Three minutes later Graham was denied a second goal when his fierce shot was punched away y Keiran Jimmy. But from the resulting corner the same combination of Neil Roberts and Graham Hall came up trumps again to put us 4 goals ahead. This time Neil’s kick went right across the area to beyond the far post where Graham was on hand to slide the ball into the net.

Keiran Jimmy made a good save from Darren Franklin and appeared to bring down Tony Fields in the area but no penalty was given. The final subs for both sides came on, Keith Rowlands and Gilmar Rodrigues Galean for Michael Buckley and Matt O’Brien and Vinnie Iannone and Ashley Addison for Mark Burfoot and Darren Franklin. Our 2 subs wasted no time in combining, Vinnie setting up Ash who rounded the keeper to make the score 5-0 in the 74th minute. We had a scare when Tom Vincent came out to clear a through ball off the toes of Keith Rowlands who is not only one of the joint Player Managers but also Hanwell’s leading scorer with 275 goals in 349 appearances over a 14 year period. Tom took a knock and hobbled around for the rest of the game but hopefully it will not be too serious an injury.

With 6 minutes to go Neil Roberts pass set up Tony Fields who did not disappoint to make the score an unbelievable 6-0. Hanwell tried valiantly to get a goal to salvage some pride but we defended superbly and although Tom was hobbling he wasn’t put under any undue pressure and there were no more goals.

This was quite simply an amazing result against a side that we usually struggle to beat, this was only our 2nd success in 12 attempts. There was a lot to be taken from this game – a clean sheet, some great finishing particularly in the second half and a very strong subs bench. In 6 games we have scored 23 goals with 9 different scorers and kept 3 clean sheets. There is still a long way to go but the early signs are looking very promising. The only down side was the injury to Tom Vincent and near the end David Salmon went off as well with a sore ankle, lets hope they both recover quickly.
