With glorious sunny weather and 8 goals we could not have started our league campaign off any better. Our opponents Kentish Town had a first half they will want to forget, but they did improve after the interval and could have grabbed a goal or two. As a contest this match was over just past the half hour mark because by then we were 4-0 up and the visitors defence was in tatters. Andy Mullins in particular gave the Town left back Ossie Barkat a roasting and but for some missed chances and some good goalkeeping from Damien McCarthy the score would have been well into double figures.
There were 2 changes from the midweek win over Hatfield Town - Darren Franklin made his first start in place of Vinnie Iannone who was away, and Graham Hall was back from holiday and replaced the injured Matt Myatt and took over the captain’s armband. On the bench we had Ashley Addison, Andy Humphreys and Luke Byrne which shows the strength of our attacking options as well as 18 year old George Livieng and former Tring Corries player Gareth Lee.
From the start we meant business and chances were created immediately and it took just 11 minutes for the visitors defence to crack. A superlative cross from the right from Chris Salmon picked out Tony Fields at the far post and his accurate header high into the net secured his opening goal of the season. Two minutes later Mark Burfoot helped the ball onto Darren Franklin who beat the offside trap to score his 2nd goal in two games and make the score 2-0. Chances were coming thick and fast and Andy Mullins was causing havoc down our right wing but goal number came from the left flank in the 21st minute when Rob Duncan’s cross was delicately touched home by Mark Burfoot.
A few minutes later Town were unlucky when Luke Kavanagh saw his header from a corner hit the woodwork and then in the 31st minute their captain Charlie Kanaris went off injured to be replaced by Kesi Dryden. This change may have disrupted the centre of their defence as 2 minutes later Mark Burfoot steered his header from a super cross from Andy Mullins into the far corner for his 2nd and our 4th goal. McCarthy continued to pull off some good saves and Town called for a penalty when their skilful young midfielder Fabion Simms fired wide under pressure from Rob Duncan. Town felt they were hard done by when 6 minutes into added time we were awarded a penalty when Jamie Prouten barged Mark Burfoot in the back as he was about to head the ball into an empty net. Andy Mullins accepted the opportunity to score his first goal of the season from the penalty to make the score 5-0 at half time.

Town improved enormously after the break and we found it hard to maintain the intensity we showed in the first 45 minutes. The visitors enjoyed a lot of possession and demonstrated that they can pass the ball around although they didn’t really cause us too many problems at the back and Dave Clark wasn’t called upon to make a serious save throughout the game. Carl Gibbs did break through, although he was offside, and was fouled by Henry Thomas who was perhaps fortunate to escape a card.
We brought on Ashley Addison for Darren Franklin and later Gareth Lee made his debut as a replacement for Graham Hall. Town also made some changes replacing Jason Donlon with Aaron Clarke and bringing on James Lindsey for Thomas Looney. Lindsey proved to be handful and it was surprising he wasn’t played from the start. From his cross Steve Smith smashed the ball against his own bar as he attempted to clear the danger and later Lindsey produced a skilful turn to give himself some space but his shot went wide of the far post.
After a lull Ashley Addison stirred us into action again and notched goal number 6 in the 79th minute when from the left edge of the area he neatly stepped aside a challenge then cracked a good shot past the keeper. Three minutes later he doubled his tally by smashing home a loose ball after the keeper made a good save from Andy Humphreys. That made the score 7-0 and any hope that the visitors had of keeping it down to a respectable level was shattered. Ashley Addison was denied his hat-trick by a good save from McCarthy and Lindsey set up Carl Gibbs with a chance he should not have missed. It clearly wasn’t Town’s day and that was confirmed in the 3rd minute of time added at the end when Barkat pulled down Andy Mullins and a penalty was awarded. Mark Burfoot seized the opportunity to claim an early season hat-trick when he blasted home goal number 8.

A great day for us but a miserable one for Kentish Town. They showed in the 2nd half that they can play a bit and they will bounce back from this set back. We must not become complacent as we have some tough games coming up, starting on Tuesday night with a visit to last season’s runners-up Harefield United. But it was a great start and boost to our goal difference so lets hope we can build on this performance.
