Tring Athletic 3-4 Stansted

Tring started the better of the two sides with David Whicker crossing the ball into the area as early as the 2nd minute, which could not be picked out. A good move between Henry Thomas, Dave Whicker and Andy Mullins found Neil Roberts who was adjudged to have handled before finding the net. Stansted gained a corner, which was easily cleared up, to Whicker who shot wide. In the 20th minute, Athletic won a free kick when Roberts was fouled. Whicker floated the ball in for Mark Burfoot to time his run superbly to head into the top corner for the first goal.
Tring were well in control and stringing some good moves together. In the 28th minute, Burfoot played a good through ball to Neil Roberts who was given off side but in his endeavour to connect with the ball he collided with the keeper, which resulted in Roberts having to come off to be replaced by Ashley Addison. Steve Smith then looped the ball into the area, which was met by Tony Fields, but Paul Dennis saved well. Athletic won another corner, which Addison took short to Whicker. He picked out Burfoot again with a superb cross, which the centre forward duly put away to give Tring a 2-goal lead.
Jamie Haywood had a good shot from 30 yards out but Clark in the home goal dealt this with. In the 37th minute Stansted could have equalised when a long ball caught out the Tring defence, but a superb goal line clearance from Steve Smith saved the day.
Just before half time the opposition pulled a goal back when a long ball from back was picked up by Kevin Vallis, who scored from an acute angle. Before the half time whistle, Chris Salmon picked up a yellow card following a succession of fouls.
Stansted replaced Andy Oxby with Paul Seymour at half time.
Tring won an early free kick which Whicker floated in to Chris Salmon but his effort went wide. From then on Stansted took control of the game. A free kick from Tommy Spillane was pushed away for a corner by the home keeper. Stansted were now in the ascendancy and a succession of free kicks and long throws were putting the home defence under increasing pressure. Paul Seymour was yellow carded for the visitors in the 55th minute and Steve Smith picked up a yellow card for an unnecessary foul. Tring were giving away free kicks in their endeavour to get a grip on the game and in the 60th minute one of these hit the post and was luckily cleared. In the 62nd minute against the run of play, Tring’s keeper played a long ball up field, which Burfoot glanced onto Addison who turned a shot past the keeper to give Tring a 3-1 lead. The visitors responded immediately and a speculative effort from Jamie Haywood found the back of the net two minutes later. Joe Johnson replaced Paul Seymour for the visitors in the 64th minute. Another route one ball into the Tring area resulted in Smith heading into his own goal to make the score 3-3 after 67 min. Stansted were now smelling victory and their long throws were causing lots of problems in the home area. Dave Foskett replaced Tony Fields in the 76th min. Dave Whicker was still trying to push the home team forward and in the 78th min he cut inside a his good shot was put out for a corner by the visitor’s keeper. However this was the 78th minute and was the first corner for Tring in this half. Danny Grey replaced Mullins and a minute later Burfoot had a great chance for his hatrick but his effort lacked any power and the Stansted keeper parried away. Grey was making some good runs down the left but was unable to pick out a Tring player with his final ball. Two blatant foul’s were allowed to go unpunished down the Tring left and then in The 3rd minute of added time Stansted were awarded a free kick some 45 yards out on the right touch line. Andy Oxby fired in the free kick, which eluded everyone, and ended in the net to give the visitors a 4-3 lead and they played the game out to the end to gain an away game against Wivenhoe and another step on the way to Wembley.
Another game when Tring failed to put the game to bed when they had the chances and this came back to haunt them later on when the opposition gained the upper hand and were gifted some soft goals. This is now a 6 game losing run and the players need to regain their confidence and belief in what they are capable of to get the season underway again.
