FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round –Sponsored by eon.
Barking Town 2-3 Tring Athletic.

This was our first time the two sides had met which is the beauty of this competition. Barking ground is of a good standard with a flat albeit hard surface and covered terracing along three sides. Unfortunately for the travelling supporters there wasn’t a clubhouse, so ideas of a pre-season drink were dashed.
The game started at a furious pace with both sides giving the ball away, we got off to the worst possible start when Barking’s Jarred Small in the 90th second, won the ball on the right, cut inside and his speculative shot hit the far post and went in.
Tring did not panic and gradually started to gain control of the game. Barking were giving away lots of free kicks and in the 18th minute another foul, this time on Darren Franklin gave Tring another opportunity. Although some 35 yards out, Neil Roberts stepped up and smashed the ball into the top right-hand corner to even the scores.
From the restart, Tom Vincent had to be alert to a high ball into the area, but he dealt with this and cleared up field. In the 23rd minute, Barking won a free kick and decided to take it quickly, the ball hit Darren Franklin as he was walking away and bounced to Neil Roberts who shot for goal and the keeper who was off his line could only help the ball into the net, This time from about 30 yards out.
Some tough tackling from both sides went un-punished, in particular Ashley Addison suffering out on the right. The referee played the advantage as we had possession but blew up for a foul on Jack Copson. Neil Roberts again lined up the free kick but this time was too close (25 yards) and hit the cross bar.
Several more good runs from Darren Franklin and Neil Roberts came to nothing and the half ended 2-1 to Tring
At the start of the second half Barking Goal scorer was booked for abusive language and was lucky not to be sent off.
Dave Salmon was then booked rather harshly for a tackle when he won the ball cleanly but it was from behind.
On 52 minutes Ashley Addison failed to get enough on a diving header from Darren Franklins cross. Barking were using long balls on the strong breeze to hit Tring’s area. From one such lob the ball hit the bar and went over, but Vincent looked confident he had it covered.

Barking were trying to get into the game and some tough tackling was required from Steve Smith to cut out a move down the left.
Tring were still trying to play football and a good move between Addison and Franklin broke down with Mark Burfoot adjudged to be off side.
Barking won a corner which Vincent caught comfortably in the 63rd minute.
Tring then won a corner in the 69th minute, the ball was headed out but only to Neil Roberts whose fierce drive was deflected behind for another corner. This time Graham Hall was clear on the back post and will be disappointed in not hitting the target. On 72 minutes Danny Gray replaced Addison.
Then in the 75th minute a long kick from Barking’s keeper was met by Dave Salmon but he could not get a clean head on the ball which sailed over Vincent’s head for the equalising goal.
Henry Thomas picked up a booking but the resulting free kick was put wide.
On 78 minutes Roberts went past two players and tried to place the ball round the keeper, but it went wide. This was to be his last effort as he was replaced by David Whicker, who made an immediate impact in the 81st minute he picked out Mark Burfoot who hit a tremendous shot past the keeper only for Barking’s Scott Borthwick to stop the ball with his hand. Being the last man and deliberate handball he had to be shown the red card. Burfoot took the resulting penalty and dully scored to give Tring the lead again.
In the 85th minute, Barking made a double substitution as a last ditch attempt and Dave Foskett was brought on for Darren Franklin.
Another long ball into the area was met by Henry Thomas who the challenging Johnny Offei thought had elbowed him. Once he realised he had not received a free kick he jumped up and raised his hand to Thomas which resulted in another red card for the home side. Barking had one more good chance when the keeper found his forward on the edge of the area. He brought the ball down well but could only shoot wide. The final whistle was met with some unrest from the home side who thought that they deserved a draw and did not get the rub of the green. Maybe a lesson to be learnt by all is that if you wind the officials up too much, that may happen.
